Coaching vs. Therapy β€” What You Need to Know

Transparency is a core value here. Before we work together, I want you to understand exactly what coaching is β€” and what it isn't.

🎯

What Coaching Is

Goal-oriented, structured support focused on skill-building, accountability, clarity, and follow-through. Coaching helps you apply knowledge and make meaningful change in your daily life.

🚫

What Coaching Is Not

Coaching is not psychotherapy, mental health treatment, medical care, or crisis services. I do not diagnose, treat, or cure mental health conditions β€” and coaching is not a substitute for clinical care.

🌐

Cross-Border Practice

I work with clients globally via secure video. Privacy protections and legal requirements vary by country and region. We discuss what this means for you specifically before beginning.

Specialized Training. Clear Boundaries. Real Support.

I'm Joshua White β€” a recovery coach with a Master of Social Work background and advanced training in sex addiction, partner betrayal trauma, and somatic approaches to healing. Through Irongate Coaching, I bring specialized knowledge to a focused, global coaching practice.

My training includes the Somatic Experiencing (SE) model β€” an evidence-informed, body-based approach to nervous system regulation β€” along with the APSATS and CSAT frameworks for sex addiction recovery. This background shapes how I work, even in a coaching (non-clinical) context.

I work with individuals who are reasonably stable and ready to use structured coaching to accelerate their recovery, navigate a formal disclosure, or rebuild after betrayal. I'm direct, transparent, and practical.

  • Trauma-informed coaching β€” pacing and safety matter
  • Sex addiction–specific knowledge (CSAT / APSATS frameworks)
  • Somatic Experiencing training for nervous system support
  • Full disclosure process expertise β€” preparation through aftermath
  • Partner betrayal lens β€” serving both sides of the recovery equation
  • Global practice β€” comfortable with time zones and cross-border nuance

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between coaching and therapy?

Therapy is a licensed clinical service involving diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, governed by state and national licensing laws. Coaching is goal-oriented, non-clinical support focused on skill-building, accountability, and forward progress. Coaching works alongside β€” not instead of β€” therapy for complex issues like sex addiction and betrayal trauma.

Do I need to be in therapy to work with you?

You don't need to be currently in therapy, but coaching is most effective when you're reasonably stable. If your situation suggests clinical care is indicated, I'll be transparent about that and can help with referrals. We discuss this during the free consultation.

What is a "full disclosure" and can you help with it?

A therapeutic full disclosure is a structured process in which a person with compulsive sexual behaviors discloses their full history to their partner β€” in a controlled, supported setting. I offer coaching to help individuals in recovery prepare a thorough, honest disclosure, and help betrayed partners navigate the process with grounded questions and pacing. Note: the formal clinical disclosure process (including formal impact letters and polygraph coordination) is typically led by a CSAT therapist.

Do you work with people outside the United States?

Yes β€” Irongate Coaching is a global coaching practice. I work with clients across North America, Europe, Australia, and beyond via secure video. All sessions are conducted in English. We'll discuss time zones and relevant cross-border privacy considerations during the initial consultation.

What are CSAT, APSATS, and SEP?

CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) is an advanced certification through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). APSATS (Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists) is a separate professional organization specializing in partner trauma support. I am currently an APSATS Trainee and CSAT Candidate, actively completing this specialized training. SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) is a credential earned through training in Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing model for trauma and nervous system regulation.

What is Somatic Experiencing (SE)?

Somatic Experiencing is an evidence-informed, body-based approach to resolving trauma and chronic stress, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. As an SEP, I'm trained to help clients work with nervous system activation, grounding, and regulation β€” tools that are particularly valuable in recovery from betrayal trauma and compulsive behavior patterns. In a coaching context, I use SE-informed skills rather than clinical SE therapy.

How long does coaching typically last?

Most clients begin with an 8–12 week commitment and reassess from there. Some come for a specific goal (like preparing for a disclosure) and finish in a focused block. Others continue ongoing accountability coaching for several months. We'll design the structure around your actual goals.

Is coaching confidential?

Yes, within important limits. Coaching information is private except when someone is at imminent risk of harm, where suspected abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person may require reporting, or where a court order compels disclosure. Cross-border coaching adds complexity β€” we discuss what applies in your specific jurisdiction before we begin.

What does "partner-centric recovery" mean?

Partner-centric recovery refers to a recovery orientation in which the person with compulsive sexual behaviors takes consistent, concrete accountability toward rebuilding safety and trust with their partner. It focuses on empathy, transparency, consistency, and demonstrating change through behavior β€” not just words. I offer coaching for individuals in recovery who genuinely want to understand the impact of their actions and rebuild trust.
